As Business Fitness celebrates 25 years, CEO Stuart Spalding reflects on a journey shaped by continuous change, a clear sense of purpose and a willingness to keep looking ahead.
Over the past 25 years, Stuart has guided the company through multiple waves of industry transformation, from paper-based workflows to cloud technology, automation and now AI. Yet despite the pace of change, Stuart believes the mission has remained remarkably consistent. "The industry we've picked to be in over the last 25 years has probably changed more in the last one or two years than it has across all the years before that."
While the shift in technology has been a key factor, the most significant change has been the opportunity to help firms work in fundamentally different ways. "What we've been doing all along is the same thing that we're doing now. We're using different technology, but the idea is that there must be a more efficient way for accountants to get the majority of their jobs done." Stuart has consistently challenged the business to look beyond today's needs and focus on where the profession is heading next.
That philosophy has shaped every stage of the Business Fitness journey. What began with standardised templates, systems and processes evolved into paperless workflows, cloud platforms and integrated solutions designed to help firms work more effectively. Stuart believes the company's success has been built on something far more enduring.
"Trust has been the cornerstone."
That trust has been earned through long-term relationships and honest conversations. Stuart points to the many clients who have remained with Business Fitness for decades as evidence of the strength of those foundations. Business Fitness has continued to evolve alongside them while staying true to the principles that earned their trust in the first place.
Looking ahead, Stuart sees the profession entering one of its most significant periods of transformation. The emergence of AI is creating opportunities for firms to rethink where they deliver value and how they support their clients. "We know how firms operate, and we think we've got a pretty good insight into how they're going to need to operate in the future."
It is a balance of ambition and pragmatism that has helped transform a small start-up into a trusted technology partner for accounting firms across Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. For Stuart, the most exciting part of the journey is still ahead: helping shape the future of a profession that looks very different from the one Business Fitness first set out to serve.
