As Chief Information Officer, Tim has helped build the foundations that allow accounting firms to trust Business Fitness with some of their most important compliance workflows.
11 years in, Tim has witnessed the transition from traditional software delivery to a cloud-first platform, fundamentally changing how technology is delivered and the responsibility that comes with it. "The biggest change has been the delivery model," says Tim. "When I joined, we were shipping software that firms installed and ran themselves. Today, we run a cloud platform on their behalf."
For Tim, that shift represents far more than a change in technology. "It changes everything behind the scenes because we're now accountable for uptime, performance and the security of client data every hour of every day, not just for the quality of the code we ship."
Expectations around security and resilience have evolved just as quickly. "The other big shift is that security has moved from the back of the conversation to the front," he explains. It challenges us to continually strengthen our systems, processes and controls so firms can have confidence in the platform they rely on every day. "Twenty-five years ago, nobody asked for a certification or a penetration test report. Today, our clients rightly expect us to demonstrate that we're protecting their data and operating to the highest standards." That commitment is reflected in our achievement of ISO 27001 certification, demonstrating a formal and ongoing commitment to internationally recognised information security standards.
Tim believes the company's purpose has remained constant. "The problem, and the people we solve it for.” Compliance work is still detailed, deadline-driven and often harder than it needs to be. That client-first mindset is something Tim believes has underpinned the company's longevity. "70% of the top 20 Australian accounting firms are still with us, some for the best part of those 25 years. We've always built closely alongside firms and been guided by their feedback. That's been a constant throughout our growth."
Looking ahead, Tim sees the next major opportunity emerging through AI, but not in the way it's often discussed. What excites him most is the potential to remove low-value, repetitive work from the compliance process, allowing accountants to focus on where they add the most value. "Agentic AI, done properly. Not AI bolted on as a feature, but rather agents that take on the mechanical parts of the workpaper and reporting process so accountants can spend their time on judgement instead of data entry."
Tim believes the profession is approaching another significant transformation. "The opportunity is to make technology work harder so people can focus on what matters most. That's where I believe the future of the profession is headed."
